Once you’ve got donors on board, it’s your job to keep them excited and engaged. Thanking them and nurturing the relationship is essential, but don’t shy away from asking. Offering donors an opportunity to make a meaningful impact is, in itself, a gift.

Ignore the advice that says, “It’s too soon to ask again.” As long as you’ve expressed gratitude and shared the impact of their last gift, you’re in the clear. The best time to ask is when donors are still feeling the glow of their last contribution—typically within three months.

If you center your ask around the donor’s experience and make them feel like a vital part of your mission, you have nothing to worry about. By offering them ways to find more purpose and meaning in their lives, you create a win-win. The “ask” itself sparks reflection and joy. And remember, donors can always say no—just like you might decline an event invitation but still feel valued for being asked. Sometimes, you’ll say yes the next time.

Invite donors to experience the joy of giving year-round.

Most nonprofits don’t ask enough. Data shows fewer donors give exclusively in December than in the past. Since 2012, the percentage of December giving has dropped, and after the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, fewer Americans itemize deductions. The year-end tax benefit isn’t as compelling as it once was.

So, don’t hold back from fundraising throughout the year. If someone gives in January or February, don’t wait until next winter to reach out again! Recency is one of the strongest indicators of future giving.

Now’s the perfect time to build an integrated cultivation and solicitation plan for the rest of the year. Consider what will make donors feel emotionally fulfilled and inspired to invest in your mission all year long. Review your donor segments and think about how to encourage repeat or larger gifts. Keep them connected, and you’ll keep them giving.
